Setting the Stage
Ron Galella is widely credited as the father of American celebrity photography. Six decades documenting Jackie Onassis, Marlon Brando, Andy Warhol, and the cultural figures of the second half of the twentieth century, producing over 4 million photos. I conducted the final interview with Ron seven days before he passed away, a conversation that gave me a direct sense of how he saw his own work and the world he documented. When I came on to lead the estate’s digital presence, the objective was bring Ron’s archive back into the contemporary conversation.
How I Solved It
A close look at who was already following the estate’s Instagram revealed a remarkable list of public figures, fashion-industry names, and subjects Ron had photographed across his career. That observation became Stories Behind the Pictures, an original interview series pairing Ron’s photographs with the people inside them. Sit-downs with Brooke Shields, Nicky Hilton, and Isaac Mizrahi each placed the guest beside the actual frames Ron had captured of them and let them speak on record about those moments.
From there, the work moved outward. Curators and institutions around the world were already platforming Ron’s photographs, often without direct connection to the estate. We approached those communities as credited collaborators, building partnerships that let Ron’s name travel alongside his images the way it always should have. Three new fine art representatives joined the estate’s gallery network. Vogue Italia ran a feature. Collectors started reaching out about prints.
McAuley is a natural interviewer on top of being a social media guru. He brings an engaging, consistent and exciting approach to content creation for such a niche topic like celebrity photojournalism. He always has great ideas and works very well with the team he represents online. Definitely an asset for anyone looking to hone or build their social media presence. Cannot recommend enough.

Ron’s archive just needed a reintroduction to the people he photographed, the institutions that already loved his work, and a new generation discovering what twentieth-century celebrity culture actually looked like through his lens.
